Quick Review: Tsujiri in Kyoto station, Japan

I had been meaning to go to Tsujiri for years but never managed it within two Japan trips. So desperate times called for desperate measures and I’d set aside a day in my trip to specifically visit delicious dessert cafes in Kyoto with Tsujiri near the top of the list.

Tsujiri is a pretty ubiquitous brand famous for its green tea desserts; it has several branches mainly in Kyoto and all around the world. I specifically aimed for the Kyoto Station branch because I figured it would be the easiest to locate; especially since I was thwarted by the lack of GPS last time.

There was barely a queue when we visited Tsujiri on a weekday afternoon and we were quickly ushered to a seat almost immediately. This was great because by all accounts hour long queues were not unusual for this branch. Located on the higher levels of kyoto station we were treated to a good view over the city, although it mainly looked a bit grey, and we were surrounded by lots of young women. Tsujiri was an absolute girl magnet.

I ordered a Tsujiri parfait for 1,178.00 JPY / 7.49 GBP and a Tokusen Tsujiri parfait at 1,383.00 JPY / 8.80 GBP each.  Both parfaits contain matcha whipped cream, chestnuts, matcha jelly, azuki bean paste, matcha ice cream, vanilla ice cream, matcha syrup and agar jelly cube. The differences are that the Tsujiri parfait contained hojicha jelly whilst the Tokusen Tsujiri parfait contained matcha castellia, rice dumplings and matcha sherbet.

The desserts were mildly sweet with a strong, but not bitter, matcha taste. In other words it matched with my taste buds exactly; I like my desserts to be similar to popcorn: light enough to make you want more.

This is of course a dangerous game to play with calories and I won’t recommend making a habit of visiting Tsujiri too often; the desserts have so light a tough that before you know it your pockets are empty and  crumbs are everywhere.

Tsujiri was a delicious and pleasant experience and worth visiting at least once.
