Quick Review: Kezurihiya Kyoto Gion, Japan

Kezurihiya Kyoto in Gion was the least famous of the dessert restaurants that I wanted to visit during my informal dessert tour. I wanted to go there for purely shallow reasons; their kakigori (shaved ice) just looked so very pretty with its latte style artwork on top. There weren’t very many reviews online, but I figured how wrong can you go with shaved ice?

The restaurant was located in the basement of the APA hotel in Shijo Street within Kyoto and the route there was so empty that it felt as if I was accidentally trespassing in the hotel itself. When we walked in I triggered a very loud bell to ring in the silence and the waitress came out in the manner similar to someone who works in a countryside restaurant: slightly surprised and confused.

I ordered a Matcha kakigori for 1,000.00 JPY / 6.36 GBP whilst my bf ordered a Hojicha kakigori for the same price. The sets came with a drink and three odd tasting beans/nuts/raisins.

The presentation was just like the advertisements with a pretty stencil image on top of the shaved ice done in matcha or hojicha flakes. The gorgeous white and gold earthenware cups and bowls could be bought from the restaurant and really added to the presentation.

Perhaps it was because of its location underground and its ordinary menu, but we were alone during the almost two hours that we had stayed there. We didn’t see the waitress again after she gave us our food, I had the distinct feeling that she was bored out of her mind.

It felt pretty eerie sitting in an empty restaurant, the last time I was in a restaurant this empty I was in a small town just outside of Oxford and the restaurant was literally someone’s living room.
