Quick Review: Charyouhouzenji/茶寮法善寺, Japan

I was pining after dessert after the spicy noodles in Bakudanya and particularly for shaved ice. However there weren’t a lot of kakigori recommendations on English websites for the Hiroshima area and it took a while before I stumbled onto Charyoujouzenji on a Japanese website. Finding the location was also an issue as there isn’t an official website for the restaurant and the Japanese name is needed for google maps. The actual location of the restaurant was located centrally in town and pretty easy to find.

Charyoujouzenji had a distinct Japanese style with low wooden tables, small stools and a muted colour scheme. It felt like a small family owned business and could only seat around 20 people. The atmosphere was very calming, low-key and there appeared to be many locals frequenting the establishment.

Charyoujouzenji is most famous for its green tea kakigori and so I ordered one whilst my boyfriend ordered ice cream with matcha jelly, azuki bean and mochi.

It was very affordable at under 1,000.00 JPY / 6.20 GBP and the dishes were reasonably sized.

The desserts had a very mild taste to them typical of Japanese restaurants and were perfectly pleasant. Charyoujouzenji is thus a mild recommendation from myself.
